Second Class Refrigeration Arena Course

The Second Class Refrigeration Course is a six-month course designed to help facilities train their staff to obtain a Second Class Refrigeration ticket so that they can continue to meet the Department of Labour and Advanced Education’s codes and regulations.

This course is offered through a partnership with the Recreation Facility Association of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA), Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), and the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. It consists of several in-class sessions at NSCC Akerley Campus and online training, which takes six months. Once you have attended all the mandatory in-class sessions, passed the online requirements and have 2000 hours, you will be eligible to write the final exam administered by the Department of Labour and Advanced Education (Technical Safety Division).

The deadline for the 2024 course is November 17, 2023

In March, RFANS and NSAA travelled across the province to visit facilities that currently have apprentices enrolled in the course to check in, gather feedback, and discuss ways that the course could be approved. The course was originally designed to help facility operators who had been out of school for some time and had minimal computer experience but lots of hands-on experience in the field.

As the industry changes, we see a need to adjust the course to meet the industry’s needs. We heard a recurring theme of adding a practical component to the course to allow for more hands-on experience. We will continue to work with our partners to make improvements that ensure our facility operators get the training needed to keep our facilities safe.
